Welcome from the Chair and
Residency Program Director
The Department of Anesthesiology
at the University of Rochester Medical Center focuses
on the residents. The Department
views each resident as an individual
and provides a personalized level of
increasing responsibility in order to
develop 100% of each resident’s
potential.We have created a dynamic
and interactive learning environment
to produce graduates who are
not only outstanding clinicians, but
also creative thinkers. There are
many key elements that make the
University of Rochester a leading
anesthesiology program.
Outstanding Clinical Training
Graduating residents from the
University of Rochester are outstanding
clinicians.With over
30,000 anesthetics administered
annually, our residents learn to provide
anesthesia for all types of surgical
procedures.We assign progressively
more complicated anesthetics
to challenge the residents throughout
their training in order that they
develop into confident and competent
anesthesiologists. Since our
faculty have received their training
from many institutions, our residents
are exposed to diverse anesthetic
approaches and techniques.
Comprehensive Didactics
Our Department has a very comprehensive
didactic program, which
is outlined in this brochure.
Residents acquire a complete knowledge
base in the field of anesthesiology.
Our graduates’ excellent performance
on the written and oral
ABA board exams attest to the value
of this approach.
Research Opportunities
The Department is involved in cutting-
edge research in both the basic
and clinical sciences with NIH,
industry, and internally supported
studies in progress. A significant
number of our faculty have active
research projects for which the
Department encourages resident
participation. Many residents present
their research or case reports at
the annual Midwest Anesthesia
Residents Conference.
Atmosphere
We have created a humane
Anesthesiology training program–a
tribute to the fact that the entire
Department focuses on the residency
program. The high morale of
our residents reflects the fact that
our faculty view the residents as
colleagues and friends during training,
and wish to see this relationship
extend throughout your professional
life.

see for yourself
During these times of rapid change
in anesthesiology and in all of medicine,
the University of Rochester
has created a dynamic residency
program that will continue to provide
our residents with outstanding
training in a caring and stable environment.
With our emphasis on
education and individual attention,
our residents have consistently
attained a high level of achievement
on board exams and career placement.
Although we value the clinical
and academic achievements of our
residents, we are equally proud of
the personal and friendly atmosphere
in which these achievements
are attained. If we can address any
questions before, during, or following
your visit please do not hesitate
to contact us.
