Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA): Recent graduate or experienced CRNA who will provide anesthesia services to patients at Strong Memorial Hospital under the medical direction of members of the faculty of the Department of Anesthesiology of the University of Rochester Medical Center. Responsibilities include: Perform a pre-anesthetic evaluation of the patient's condition by reviewing the medical history (including allergies and medications taken), the physical examination, laboratory data, x-ray results, ECG reports, and other available information in the patient's chart; by personally obtaining other pertinent information, such as (but not limited to) history of previous anesthetics and anesthesia problems in family members; and by personally evaluating the airway; discuss a proposed anesthetic plan and any other relevant information with the attending anesthesiologist; assemble supplies and equipment for the anesthetic, checking them for safety and proper function; perform technical procedures, such as venipuncture, arterial puncture, laryngoscopy, and intubation of the trachea and/or provide spinal or epidural analgesia; induce and maintain anesthesia at a safe level, monitoring life support functions during the administration of anesthesia and consulting with the attending anesthesiologist when indicated; identify and inform the attending anesthesiologist, the operating surgeon, or both of clinically significant changes in the patient's condition and institute appropriate measures to support and restore a stable physiologic state; accompany the patient to the recovery room or intensive care unit and report to the nurse assuming responsibility for the patient's post-anesthesia care all information of importance in helping to assure the patient's optimal recovery; and visit the patient postoperatively, noting any untoward reactions of complications attributable to the anesthetic, informing the attending anesthesiologists of any apparent anesthetic complications, and following up with further postanesthetic visits until discharge from the hospital or until any post-anesthetic complication has resolved. Required: graduation from an approved school of nursing, graduation from a school for nurse anesthesia accredited by the Council on Accreditation of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, current license to practice nursing in New York State, and compliance with requirements of the Council on Accreditation of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists for continuing education to fulfill and maintain AANA certification.
