Greetings From Our Chairman
The Department of Anesthesiology has a long history of excellence in clinical care and in the education of residents who have been recognized in the private and academic communities as carrying on this tradition locally and nationally. The Department's history of going outside to bring in leaders with new ideas and initiatives began with Dr. Alastair J. Gillies in 1959 as the first Chair and continuing with Dr. Ronald Gabel in 1983, who was recruited from Harvard's Brigham and then Dr. Denham Ward in 1992, recruited from UCLA. This tradition continued with my arrival in 2000. I was formerly at Johns Hopkins University for a total of 20 years and was Chairman at the Imperial College School of Medicine in London, England prior to accepting the chairmanship here. You can view my CV here (Adobe Acrobat .PDF file). Patient CareSecond, to enhance the quality of care and innovate in the fields of clinical anesthesiology, surgical and non-surgical therapies, intensive care, and pain management that will benefit our patients, present and future, that now number over 45,000/year. ResearchThird,to enhance basic and translational clinical research programs specifically via a Departmentally supported integrated multi-disciplinary translational research group focused on mitochondrial dysfunction under stress conditions known as the (Mitochondrial Research & Innovations Group (MRIG)), and embedded within the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology. In addition, the Department actively supports clinical studies in respiratory physiology, intensive care, outcomes research, neuropathic pain and three dimensional computer based anatomic reconstruction for regional anesthesia. Collaboration and FinanceFinally, to develop systems and programs within the Department linked closely in focus and mission with the hospitals of Strong Health, and the Medical Center that will allow us to establish a stable financial foundation to support all of the above goals.
